Legacy of excellence

Transforming hip surgery
Total Hip Replacement (THR) was pioneered at Wrightington Hospital by Professor John Charnley in the 1950s and 1960s.

Why Wrightington?
Deliberately sited away from the pollution of the city, Wrightington was established as a specialist hospital to treat tuberculosis.

Changing lives
In 1961, Charnley established a new Biomechanics Laboratory and Workshop at Wrightington.

Fighting infection
In addition to revolutionising the total hip prosthesis, Charnley also pioneered the clean air environment at Wrightington.

Aiming for perfection
Although the clean air environment brought about a dramatic fall in infection rates, Charnley wasn’t satisfied.
