The John Charnley Trust is committed to raising standards, enabling a new generation of surgeons.
The aims of the charity are:
- The promotion of research into the field of human joint replacement and in particular that of Low Friction Arthroplasty of the hip.
- The creation of research fellowships and the making of grants to enable young orthopaedic surgeons to visit centres of excellence in orthopaedic surgery.
- The sponsorship of lectures, seminars and conferences to further the technique of Low Friction Arthroplasty pioneered by Sir John Charnley.
Charnley Travelling Fellowship
The John Charnley Trust is open to applications to support orthopaedic surgeons in training to visit centres of interest in reconstructive hip and knee surgery worldwide.
The John Charnley Trust would not normally support fellowships that attract a salary and also not support top up fees for travel, visa, etc. We are particularly interested in supporting stand alone fellowships to enable surgeons to undertake relatively short visits, three to six weeks, to visit centres of interest.
Previous reportsThere are two deadlines in the calendar year: 31 March and 30 September. Each application will be assessed during April and October that year, and successful applicants will be informed before May and November. Applications will be limited to a maximum of £5000.
Applications will be vetted by the Trustees and candidates shortlisted and will be interviewed remotely.
In line with the aims of The John Charnley Trust, applicants must be committed orthopaedic surgeons. Any proposed centres must be approved by The John Charnley Trust which has had connections over many years with centres of excellence both national and international.
Application requirements:
- Covering letter with a detailed summary of your fellowship plans.
- Up to date copy of CV.
- Letter of acceptance from host centre(s)/surgeons.
- Letter of reference supporting fellowship from TPD/supervisor or Clinical Director.
Claim requirements:
- Completed claim form on return from fellowship.
- Copy of relevant receipts.
- Written report of fellowship to be submitted within six weeks of the fellowship of 400 to 800 words.
