Sir John was a master surgeon, innovator and bio-engineer. His work has been an outstanding contribution to the relief of human suffering.
In 1962, Sir John Charnley performed the first total hip replacement at Wrightington hospital. His methods have influenced and inspired orthopaedic surgeons in every continent, giving Wrightington a unique place in the history of medicine.
